Holidays
in Porthleven - West Cornwall
Porthleven
on Cornwall's South West Coast is a pretty unspoilt fishing village
that has become a very popular holiday destination for families - with
a working harbour, great local beaches, many traditional attractions
and a very busy rage of shops selling all manner of holiday articles.
Porthleven's picturesque harbour is the
hub of activity in the town. A collection of cafes and bars line the
quay, creating a leisurely environment, where you can sit and relax,
and watch the activity on the harbour. There is a choice of pubs in
Porthleven, together with cafes, restaurants, bakery, shops and craft
workshops. There are 2 fish and chip shops, a Chinese restaurant/takeaway
and, our favourite, a delicatessen which does delicious wood-fired pizzas
to order. Porthleven also has a Post Office, self service launderette
and a supermarket.
From
Porthleven, a short walk (eastward) along the coastal path or along
the a long sandy beach, will take you to the lakeside woodland walks
of Loe Pool and the beautiful Penrose Estate. The lake
has been created by the action of the waves, piling pebbles on the beach
and creating Loe Bar - a 200m wide sandbar that traps the waters
of the Cober Valley, creating Cornwall's largest freshwater lake, (or
Loe in Cornish), The beautiful Loe is wooded on three sides and one
can walk through the woods and around the water, or take the shorter
route to Helston, Porthleven's nearest town, and catch the bus back.
Porthleven is 3 miles from the Ancient town
of Helston famous for its flora day celebrations and Flambards Village
& theme park.
