Fowey (pronounced Foy) has a unique literary and maritime heritage mingled with an unspoilt charm that attracts visitors time and time again. The town quay in Fowey is a great place to watch the activity on the river, as yachts, pleasure boats and cargo vessels sail in and out of this vibrant working port.
The scenery and character of Fowey, means that it has become a very popular sailing destination for boats from Plymouth, Dartmouth and Falmouth. The town's busy little streets, radiate from the town Quay, lined with an array of restaurants, cafes, pubs and small independent shops.
A regular ferry service will take you across the river to explore Polruan on the opposite bank. There is a car ferry that you can take, as a foot passenger, across the River to Ferryside (Daphne du Maurier's family home, not open to the public) at Bodinnick - to follow the stunning Hall Walk through the woodland on the opposite bank of the river.
Whether on foot, in a boat or in a car, Fowey is surrounded by magnificent coastal scenery, historic sites, small coves and beautiful beaches, so it is no surprise that Fowey is so popular. There is a ferry service down the coast to the picturesque fishing harbour of Mevagissey. The Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan are both close by - as are the small picturesque fishing ports of Looe and Polperro.
Fowey is of course an excellent location for outdoor activities including fishing, cycling, sailing or golf (Carlyon Bay, Lanhydrock and Porthpean are all within easy reach).
The beautiful Fowey Estuary is a haven for wildlife that stretches from the coast up to Bodmin Moor. You can hire a motor boat or canoe from the town quay and explore the beautiful natural harbour and estuary of the river Fowey. Guided river tours are also available, leaving from the quayside on a regular basis.
Fowey has numerous local attractions for you to enjoy locally including St Catherine's Castle, Fowey Aquarium, Fowey Museum, the Fowey Regatta (in August), the Daphne Du Maurier Festival (in May) or alternatively just sit and watch the sail boats go by whilst enjoying a leisurely lunch at a riverside restaurant or cafe.
