Fowey
in Cornwall is a popular holiday destination. Fowey is a picturesque,
historic working port at the mouth of the Fowey river. This is a scenic
area, with tidal creeks and small bays. The estuary and surrounding
Countryside are a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the
Fowey estuary is a natural deep water harbour, the estuary - a "Ria"
formed by the partial submergence of an unglaciated river valley. The
deep water harbour that was created has been used as a port from the
earliest times and there is a hill fort just up stream from Fowey, which
underlies the strategic importance that the area has held through time.
Today the river is popular with the boating and yachting crowds. There are popular moorings along the river. Pleasure boats and coasal cargo vessels constantly navigate their way in and out of the estuary, creating an ever changing backdrop to the Town. The streets in Fowey are very narrow reflecting the maritime past of the town, with medieval and Georgian buildings clustered along the rivers edge. Many of the buildings along Fore Street are now small shops, bistros and restaurants.
The entrance to the harbour has the enigmatic
remains of St Catherine's Castle - once part of the Tudor coastal protection
scheme. The castle, guards the entrance to the river, over looking the
sands at Readymoney Cove. Boat trips regularly leave the town
quay taking tourists up the river past the docks, where you will see
huge china clay ships being loaded with cargo. There is also a regular
ferry running from Fowey to Mevagissey Harbour, a little way down the
coast.
