The Bowshot Lady is situated at the top of the old town
of Fowey and looks across the most amazing views of this delightful Cornish
port.
FOWEY
The town of Fowey, immortalized in legend and contemporary
books, is largely unspoilt and retains it's charm from ages past. From
the wooded slopes of the estuary and it's picturesque coves to secret
creeks and busy quayside, it stimulates the imagination in everyone, Around
the next bend in the river could be a modern cruise liner on a visit or
a training ship, like a privateer under sail.
The Shops
There are two local pottery shops, shops that cater For the artist, a
delicatessen, specialist bread shop, bric-a-brac and antiques, clothes
shops, chandlers, chemist and of course souvenir shops. In addition, there
are several good restaurants catering for all tastes and pubs, also serving
quality meals.
Art Galleries
One specialises in marine art and the other has a wider choice but mainly
local themes. Several local artists exhibit in contrasting styles and
using various mediums.
Architecture
Place is the most imposing structure alongside the church and occupies
a large part of the land overlooking the town. It's tower and ramparts
dominate the Fowey skyline.
St Finbarris church, with it's own lofty spire is well
worth a visit as it contains a lot of local history within it's walls.
St. Catherine's Castle guards the entrance to the estuary on the Fowey
side, while on the Polruan side is the Tudor Watchtower.
Regatta Week
Regatta week is one of the high points in the year with many competitions
for adults and children, from dinghy sailing to crab catching. There is
a fancy dress carnival, beauty pageant, fireworks and an aerial display
by The Red Arrows, weather permitting.
Daphne Du Maurier Literary Week
The Daphne Du Maurier Literary Week continues to be popular with many
attractions at the Tented Village, including several invited celebrity
guests and some that just arrive.
Christmas
and New Year
At this time of year Fowey goes party crazy. Santa arrives by tug! ...to
switch on the fancy lights for the festival season. There is an open air
carol service in Trafalgar Square and a Christmas Fayre raffle. There
is also a well attended carol service and bell ringing in the church.
On New Year's eve most pubs have a fancy dress theme and a few fireworks.
The Eden Project
The amazing Eden Project, only 15 minutes away by car, is open all year
and is a marvelous experience for young and old.
