Engraved surface approx. 25" x 38", mounted on linen, edged with tape, a few manuscript notes for cable runs, slightly dusty, tape partly loose from one side. Surveyed in 1881 and 1882.   2. Bristol INVENTORY OF MARGT. BISSES CLOATHS Letter from Lancelot Cowper in Bristol to Madame Connell, Place St. Bichel, Brussels, concerning the division of her deceased mother's clothes, with a list of clothes prepared by Nanny, Mrs. Connell's daughter, 'by the clear description in the list you'll be able to learn from Ostend if any article is deemd contraband....', and instructions to draw on bankers for her share of Mrs. Bisses' money. Sm. folio, letter covering one page, integral address panel on verso, good wax seal, slight loss of paper where seal opened, 2p list of cloths on adjoining leaf, 2 minor repairs with archival tape. 1783. £40.00

  3. Bristol Spring Assizes COMMON AND SPECIAL JURY LISTS Two printed lists on blue paper, for 1873, each listing approx. 50 jurors with occupations. Pinned to the lists are papers relating to a case in the Exchequer of Pleas concerning land at Churchstaunton in Devon. 1873. £12.00

  4. Bristol Water Works SUPPLY OF WATER FOR TRADE PREMISES. Small 4to record book, full calf, lacks sections of spine, calf rubbed, titled in gilt 'B.W.W. Quarterly Meter Book. Thursday'. 51 double pages, some rather grubby, ruled in columns with meter no. and quarters for 1872,3,4, with numbers presumably relating to comsumption. Lists premises such as pubs, schools, shops, chapels, Baths, hotels etc., in Kingsdown, Cotham, Redland, Sneyd Park, Clifton, Leigh Woods, Westbury. 1872-4. £38.00

  6. North Street Sunday School (Upper) REGISTER OF SCHOLARS Folio volume, half calf, rubbed, gilt title on front board, title printed at head of each page, with columns across two pages for date of joining school, no. on roll, scholar's name, address, teacher, age, birthday, (showing most of the pupils were in their teens or twenties), remarks. Dates of joining run from 1880 to 1911, with a few for 1870's. 69 double-pages of entries, plus index. Lists over 800 scholars. 1880-1911. £55.00
    * The Sunday School would appear to have been at North Street, St. James, rather than Bedminster, as the scholars come from Kingsdown, St. James, Montpellier, St. Pauls, Cotham.


  7. St. Georges INVENTORY taken by her sister, of Plate, China, furniture etc., of Mary Jeaffreson, daughter of Col. Jefferson and Sarah the daughter of Adm. Perkins. Manuscript, sm. folio sheet written on one side only, in a fine neat hand, listing 'Jan. the 24th my sisters plate weighed wch. she left at St. Georges.' (includes a large Tankard and a Caster... 54oz.'). Also lists 'An Account of the Cheny', and furniture and furnishings in the various rooms 'In my brother Morgan's Chamber that was my sisters goods.... A Cloath bed lined wth. Lemon Cullered Silke with a quilt suitable... an olde Cabinet of Sedar wood .... In the wainscoat Roome, five pictures.... a large Turkie woole Carpet...' etc. 1701. £60.00

Two thick ledgers, half reversed calf, spines and corners chipped and worn, spine on one volume loose, cloth torn. 600 pages of entries in each, with name and address of customer, goods ordered, (each item priced individually, totals in column on right), when account paid. Together with narrow sm. folio ledger. 1924-34, approx. 240p., detailing account with 3 customers only. 1911-34. £65.00

  13. Cornish Tin Mines OFFER OF THE EMPLOYERS' FEDERATION to the Workers on the Mines. Printed 4to sheet detailing the present wages, rise per week etc for 7 grades of men, with additional concessions. States that if these terms are not accepted "the responsibility must rest with the men of certain Mines closing down never to re-open again". Mar. 16th 1920.... With.... Employers Federation. Schedule of Wages adopted.... March 5th 1920. List upwards of 40 jobs at the Mines with rates. 2p, fscp., gestetnered, signed by Secretary. 1920. £10.00

  14. Cornwall Minerals Railway Co. MINUTES OF PROCEEDINGS AT A SPECIAL BOARD MEETING 22nd July 1873. Manuscript, 5p. signed by Chairman, size 15" x 9", plain wraps with MS title, horizontal fold, wraps rather grubby. Pasted in at relevant points are 3 notices, one giving notice of first Ordinary General Meeting of the new company, for electing Directors, etc., notice requesting Shareholders submit old shares for new issue under the 1873 Act, and covering letter explaining the conversion to a Parliamentary Company. 1873. £85.00
    * 'From a personal inspection of the Works on the above Railway made within the last few days, I am satisfied that the Contractor, Sir. S. Peto, has so far advanced the work as to justify me in recommending that the payment which would be due to him under his Contract on the 7th proximo be made.... W.H. Thomas, Engineer'. The railway was revitalised under the speculator W.R. Roebuck 'he formed the Cornwall Minerals Railway, authorized on 21 July 1873' a number of standard gauge mineral lines 'all opened after feverish activity on 1 June 1874'.   15. Godolphin (George) ABSTRACT OF TITLE of the Most Noble George Godolphin (10th) Duke of Leeds to Heredits. in the County of Cornwall contracted to be sold to Capt. J.P. Rogers. 39p, large folio, in MS, held at corner with clip. Details wills, indentures etc. from 1849, but does not actually mention Manors, Lordships etc. by name. 12th April, 1899. £16.00

  17. Helstone Boundary REPORT UPON THE PROPOSED MUNICIPAL BOUNDARY of the Borough of Helstone. 2pp., with plan by R.K. Dawson, scale 4" to a mile, by R.K. Dawson. Plan very slightly creased. 1832. £18.00

    WHITSAND BAY HARBOUR

  18. Jones (Henry) REASONS HUMBLY OFFERED For Building a Mould or Harbour in Whitsand-Bay at the Lands-End, in Cornwall. Single folio sheet, closely printed, size approx. 17" x 12" laid down on card, with a window in the card at rear to reveal an engraved plan of the bay by Frederick de Hauttecourt, 1702, printed on verso. Size of plan approx. 6" x 10", scale 1" to the mile, compass rose, soundings, relief crudely indicated, small elevations of 3 churches, 12-line key of letters showing the Long Ships, the Brisons, 'St. Levant', etc. Margins cut down (unevenly on left-hand side), some slight creasing, area of slight staining at right hand side approx. 5" x 3", not affecting plan. n.d. or printer. (1702) £485.00
    * RARE. Gives a description of the area 'call'd in Cornish Pullan da', and 12 arguments for building the proposed mold, for want of which 'there hath been, and may be more Ships lost (yearly, besides the Mens lives) than three times the Value of what would Erect the same. Hence the Leverpoole Marchants have possessed those who trade from London that their Ships might come safer North about Ireland.... rather than run the Hazard of having their Ships taken by the Enemy, or wreckt, by reason of the great Dangers of Scilly, the Lands-End, Mount's-Bay, Lizzard'. He goes into detail about the dangerous Tides mentioning 'Sir Cloudesly Shovel's Misfortune at Scilly and the loss of the Colchester Man of War in Whitsand-Bay', and the effect on compasses of the 'many Tynn, Copper, Iron, and other Mineral-Loads'. Other advantages are that it can supply the 'Islands of Scilly, with all things necessary for Her Majesty's Garrison', that there is an abundance of 'loose Rocks or Moore-Stones for filling up and building from the Shoar....', etc. de Hauttecourt was one of the Engineers who surveyed the coast with 'Mr. Tuttell, his late Majesty's Hydrographer'.


  19. Marazion PLAN OF SUNDRY TENEMENTS in and near Marazion, the property of The Revd. Canon Rogers. Surveyed 1835 by P. Priske. In ink and 2 colours, scale 3 chains to 1", size 28" x 21", mounted in sections on linen. Shows market house and 8 plots of land, adjoining owners named. Reference table listing 11 plots. 1 section of paper at top right hand corner missing, size 9" x 2", affecting small portion of a road. Some slight bubbling of paper where glued to linen. A few later notes regarding sales, with price. 1835. £24.00

  20. Mawgan Church Town RESOLUTION of Mawgan Vestry that they will support and defray the costs of the prosecution commenced against John Hancock to be tried at the next Assizes, at the suit of Cuthbert Tremaine of the parish of Mawgan. Signed by 7 people, including Thos. Grylls for Sir Carew Vyvyan. Sm. folio sheet, folded, some browning. 1791. £15.00

  21. Perranporth Railway NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN, that application is intended to be made to Parliament.... for making and maintaining a RAIL-WAY or RAILWAYS, or TRAM-ROAD or TRAM-ROADS, with all proper works and conveniences, for the Passage of Waggons, Carts, and other Carriages.... to commence at or near Perran Porth.... and extend through or near to the village of Bolingey, and the village of Cox otherwise Cook's, and from thence to or near to Ripper's Mill.... to New Mills, Coosebean Paper Mill.... to the Bridge in Lemon Street,in the Borough of Truro.... Also, To improve and maintain the Navigation of Truro River from Mopus or Malpas Passage to Truro Quay.... Edwards, Simmons and Paul and Paynter and Whitford, Solicitors.     * Also describes the route of branches through St. Agnes, Newlyn in Pydar, and St. Allen. This was possibly a proposal for a mineral line linking the mines of the East Wheal Rose area with Truro. Scarce.


  22. River Tamar PENCIL DRAWING titled 'at Anthony. Trematon castle'. On thick paper, size 10" x 14". Shows river scene looking across from Anthony to hill on the other side of the river with houses on the far shore, masts of boats in the little harbour, castle on the skyline, two sailing boats on the river. A skilled drawing, carried right to the edge of the paper. c1806. £50.00

  23. Scilly Isles ORDNANCE SURVEY MAP Sheet No. LXXXVII.14. Size approx. 25" x 38", plus margins, scale 1/2500, slight spotting to right hand side, a few short tears to margins. Surveyed 1887, revised 1906, Second Edition. 1908. £10.00

  24. St. Ive WILL of Judith Bennicke. 1p, sm. folio, folded, blank adjoining leaf. Leaves rings to the Rector of St. Ive (John Bagwell) and his wife. 1717. £15.00
    * One of the witnesses is 'Samuel Treis.'


  25. St. Ives EVANGELIST'S LETTER. 3 pages closely-written on paper, size approx. 15" x 9", 2 leaves, folded, integral address panel with red postmark and faded black 'St Ives - C' stamp. Addressed to Mrs Denham (the writer's mother), 100 Bermondsey Street, Southwark, London, dated Saint Ives Janry. 4th 1832, but sections dated up to 30th Jan., signed M.A. Denham. Wear at some folds, with loss of a few words. The writer appears to have been in St. Ives on a preaching mission for 2 or 3 months, and to have been at the same time recovering her health, looked after by someone she refers to as 'St. Mathews'. 'My Christian regards to our Preachers.... I've delivered my Lord's message week after week.... I believe all these unusual meetings will be given up except the children or young people's, upwards of 40 attend that, Mondays at 6.... those of the grown persons that wish for help may (attend) the new rais'd class which met last Wednesday for the first time, 9 persons (married & single) joind having previously taken notes of admittance of Mr Carvesso (?). All seem in a fair way for the Kingdom.' Jan 4th - 30th 1832. £30.00

  26. Watts (Isaac) IN MEMORIAM. Lines on the Death of Elizabeth Watts, written by her affectionate husband Isaac Watts, of Australia, formerly of Hayle. Single 4to sheet, printed on one side only, 24 quatrains in double columns, in a mourning border, with line of typographic ornaments between the columns. J.E. Harris, Printer, &c, Hayle c1870. £25.00

  27. (Watts, Mark) AN INTERESTING DIALOGUE between Mark and Uncle Tom, On the severity of the Times and the prosperity of the Mines. Broadside poem in four-line stanzas with prose introduction, printed on thin paper, in three columns, two woodcuts at head, each size approx. 4" x 3", one showing a village, the other figures near a cottage. Overall size 15" x 10", laid down on fine Japanese paper, slight chips in edge of paper along 1" on left side. Printed at the 'Hayle Weekly News' Office, c1870. £48.00
    * The poem ends on an optimistic note 'May Mellanear, on Foundry-hill/With ores in plenty shine; May many hands be there employ'd/May it be a good mine. To Crenver mine I must refer/A cloak of gloom, she wore/Now her best garment is put on/And long may she endure.' The writer describes how when he became unemployed he travelled around the mines, to Dolcoath, Wheal Seaton, Roskear, etc. selling his publications. There is also a section on the port of Hayle and the vessels 'Bessie' and 'Henry Harvey'.

  30. Grampound AN ACT to indemnify Persons who shall give Evidence before the Lords Spiritual and Temporal on the Bill To exclude the Borough of Grampound, in the County of Cornwall, from sending Burgesses to serve in Parliament.... 3pp. 1821. £14.00

    Devon :- ( Selection of Antiquarian and Secondhand Books )

  31. Bernard family ACCOUNT BOOK of Elizabeth Bernard, for 6 years, beginning Jan. 1790, no address, but probably Broadhembury area. Small 4to cash book, size 8" x 6", with 150 pages of entries, receipts (mainly from Mr Bernard) on left, expenditure on right-hand page. There are many entries for purchases of clothes and for muslin, chintz, calico, dimity, ribbon, and lace. e.g. "paid Mrs Acland Lace..... 19s." She also pays Mrs Acland "for Quilting Mrs Camplin's Quilt and finding wool cotton and thread..... £1.9s.6d." Purchases are recorded in Blandford, Dorchester, Bath, Bridgwater and Taunton. She notes payments for the children's schooling, toys, "sugar plumbs", reading books, "to Mr Marsh for drawing my tooth", wages to servants, lavender water, toothpicks etc. She makes large donations at Church: "gave at the sacrament at Monkton 10s 6d.", and to charity "Paid Mrs Tucker for teaching the Charity Girls", borrows '10 guineas from the sacrament money'. The Drewes of Broadhembury are mentioned several times, e.g. "25th Jan. 1792. Rec'd of Mrs Drewe of Grange to pay Mrs Rose Drewe for a handkerchief £l.8s.0d." At this time the Lords of the Manor of Combe Raleigh were Bernards: these accounts record two fines received, one from Farmer Brewer and one from Wm. Hook. Bound in full vellum, titled in ink on front board, 3 leaves cut out, one loose. January 1790 - March 1796. £135.00
    * It is probable that this is the account book of Elizabeth Bernard, daughter of Mary and Thomas Carew, Lord of the Manor of Crowcombe, Somerset and builder of Crowcombe Court. See Collinson's History of Somerset Vol. III: "His (Thomas Carew's) first wife was Mary daughter of Francis Drew, of Grange esq. an excellent woman by whom he had three daughters, Mary, Elizabeth and Anne. Elizabeth is the wife of James Bernard of the Middle Temple."

  34. Buckerell & Godford PARTICULARS AND CONDITIONS OF SALE Of The Manors or reputed Manors of Buckerell & Godford.... and a very desirable Freehold Estate comrising 626 Acres.... Divided into compact Farms with Homesteads.... The Whole Will be Sold by Auction by Mr. James Hussey, at the Angel Inn, in Honiton, On Friday, the 23rd day of June, 1865.   35. Donn (Benjamin) A MAP OF THE COUNTY OF DEVON WITH THE CITY & COUNTY OF EXETER. Delineated From An Actual Survey By Benjamin Donn, on Twelve Sheets of Imperial Paper, the Scale and Inch to a Mile. By Benjamin Donn, Teacher of the Mathematics, &c, late of Bideford, now of the City of Bristol. Engraved By Thomas Jefferys, Geographer to His Majesty. To Which is Prefixed A General View of the County, on One Sheet, with Indexes of the Parishes, Seats, &c, for the readier finding them on the Large Map. Title page, gazeteer and list of subscribers (9pp.), double page smale-scale index map, 12 double-page map sheets, contemporary outline colour, with 4 large detailed inset plans, of the city and suburbs of Exeter; the Island of Lundy; Stoke Town and Plymouth Dock; and the town and citadel of Plymouth, which have been left uncoloured. Folio, modern calf-backed marbled boards, titled on spine. Small ink smudge, for about 4" on second sheet, occasional light off-setting of outline of hundred boundaries, four light foxing spots on third sheet, otherwise a fine crisp copy with good margins.     * The map is rarely found in this state, complete with Index map and text.nIt shows 656 gentleman's seats, represented by elevations of the building, as well as mines, salt works, quarries, lime kilns. Donn also developed a new way of showing roads according to their quality and whether they were fenced or not.
    "In 1759 The Royal Society of Arts.... offered an annual award of œ100 for the best original 1 inch to 1 mile county survey. .....Donn was the first successful applicant.... Donn is the first to identify the island in Bigbury Bay by the names Bur Island or Borough Island", see Batten and Bennett's 'Printed Maps of Devon'.


  36.   37. Lime trade, Tawstock area ACCOUNT BOOK recording sales of lime and ashes, May 1829 - Mar. 1831. Ledger, size 13" x 8", full vellum darkened, 260p, in a clear hand, plus many blanks. Each page headed with name of customer, and village or hamlet, occasionally farm (Eastacott, Lee Barton, Sanders etc.) entries comprising date, bushels of lime and ashes, with total sum, usually signed as paid by J. Cartwright or, occasionally, Geo. Lovering (presumably the lime dealers or manufacturers the ledger belonged to). At the beginning is an index of clients, 2 or 3 leaves have been torn out of the index. Some accounts have figures for 'Spring Lime' added in pencil. 1829-31. £120.00
    * Customers (over 250 listed) include Sir Bouchier Palk Wrey; Wm. Francis (Road Surveyor), Chumleigh; Mr. Richd. Davy (Surgeon), Chumleigh; Wm. Hill (Boatman), Tawstock. Other places mentioned include Burrington, Tawton, Atherington, Yarnscombe, Brightley Mills, High Bickington.

Dugdale family, of Sezincote PHOTOGRAPH AND AUTOGRAPH ALBUM of Iris Dugdale, with many good quality photographs, momentos and autographs recording country house parties, Hunt Balls, Meets, (Cotwold Hunt, Ledbury Hunt), Point to Point, Cowes Week, Sandown Park, etc., 1902 to 1908. Album size 10" x 14", full black morocco, gilt dentelles, lacks spine, front board detached, lettered 'I.H.D. April 4th, 1902' on front board, 61 pages completed, a few blank leaves at end. A typical page consists of the name of the house visited cut from headed notepaper, dates of visit, photograph of the house, & other photos., mostly titled in MS, occasionally humourous pen and ink drawings, watercolours, pencil sketch, with dance cards, small programme covers, admission tickets for sporting events visited during the stay (e.g. badge for Brooklands' Members' Enclosure), and signatures of the host family and other guests. There are over 150 small photos. (size approx. 3" x 4", and larger), and 8 large (size approx 8" x 11"). The house most visited was Lilley Brook, Charlton Kings, home of 'Uncle Herbert' (Herbert Owen Lord) and there are many photos of the house and gardens, the Lord family, huntsmen & hounds in grounds, prize chrysanthemums, billiard room, etc. Other large country estates visited include Queensmead, Windsor (page signed by Augusta and Edward Spencer Churchill, photos of Ruby Bathurst & Beryl Spencer Churchill); Paddockhurst, Sussex; Hengrave Hall, Bury St. Edmunds; Seaford Lodge, Ryde (good views of the interior); Hatley Park, Sandy (with record of game shot and decoration of real pheasant feathers); Wroxall Abbey, Warwick; Locko Park, Derby. Among the large photographs are 2 of the 'Churchill Bathurst Wedding' April 22, 1902 with bridesmaids etc all named; wedding at 'Stoke Park Oct. 1st. 1903'. 1902-9. £297.00

Playne family of Minchinhampton and Nailsworth COMMONPLACE BOOKS Two 4to notebooks, half morocco, rubbed, one volume lacking spine, containing entries from 1853-1870s, mainly resumes and extracts from books and articles on geology and prehistory, relating to Gloucestershire. Sources include Geological Magazine, Hull's "On the Physical Geography.... of the Cotteswold Hills' (with sketch maps pasted in), Aubrey, Rudder, Domesday Book, etc. One notebook is inscribed on flyleaf, in a later hand than the notes themselves, "F.C. Playne, The Grange, Minchinampton, Glos. Presented by C.E.P." In total 111p and 158p. Among the entries which are not extracts or reviews of books are (i) Account of a journey 'with Sara & Lina' from Weston super Mare to Glastonbury, Wells and Cheddar. 1848. 4p. (ii) 'Part of a letter from Alfred. London March 12th 1855' describing Owen's lectures on fossils etc. at the College of Surgeons, and his attendance at an outlandish soiree for travellers and literary men 'the card of invitation was etched with the Ninevah monuments inhaling the fragrant weed'. 4p. (ii) Letter from Alfred Playne from Paris Sept. 8, 1853. Gives a very detailed account of an eventful ascent of Mont Blanc. 23p. (iv) 'Part of a letter from Alfred Mar. 30th 1855'. 'I write to tell you of Proff. Owens opinion of the jaw.... (found at Dunkirk). He thinks it probably a jaw of the extinct Irish Elk.... Prof. Owen was very interested with the large horn, and made a sketch of it....'. 7p.     * The Gloucester Journal was one of the earliest provincial newspapers, founded in 1722. Austin lists only 6 copies between 1722 and 1727 and all but one are listed as imperfect. The woodcut view appeared at the head of the paper between April 1724 and April 1725 only (See Hyett & Bazeley 'Manual of Gloucestershire Literature' Vol I p. 323.)

Williams - on accelerating Canal Boats'), soliciting their subscription for 'my method for propelling Boats (exhibited on the Old Birminham Canal last summer, descried to be proved on a larger scale as to its utility and advantage in Canal Navigation, by an Iron Boat built after my model, and fitted up with my Propellers, and worked as a Tug boat upon the same canal....'. The ship was insured at LLoyds Coffee House. This document relates to the sale of the ship to Rains. It is described as 'formerly called the Gerona captured by and condemned as Prize to His Majesties Ship Myrtle, Clement Sneyd Esq. commander., now on her voyage to the Southern Fishery....' 13p. folio, outer sheet with docket title, written with many amendments and crossings out, on the bottom and verso of last sheet are lawyer's comments about various difficulties in the case.
