Paradise Park
Hayle, Cornwall - wildlife sanctuary and botanical gardens
16 Trelissick Road, Hayle, Cornwall, TR27 4HB | 01736 751020
A wildlife sanctuary with global impact
Paradise Park was founded near Hayle in the 1970s and has grown into one of Cornwall's most significant wildlife conservation centres, home to rare and endangered species from macaws and cockatoos to red squirrels, red pandas and otters. What sets it apart from a typical wildlife park is its conservation record: in 1987 the park launched Operation Chough, a captive-breeding and reintroduction programme that helped bring the red-billed chough - long extinct as a breeding bird in Cornwall and a bird that appears on the county's own coat of arms - back to the Cornish coast.
Two years later, in 1989, the park's owner Mike Reynolds founded the World Parrot Trust at Paradise Park, now an international conservation charity working to protect wild parrot populations and their habitats around the world. The park continues that conservation focus today through its breeding programmes for red squirrels and red pandas, alongside walk-through aviaries, otter enclosures and landscaped gardens across its grounds.
For younger visitors, the park's miniature railway - running since 1976 - takes in the grounds, and JungleBarn, a large indoor play centre, gives families a reliable wet-weather option, making Paradise Park a popular year-round day out rather than just a fair-weather one.
