More than a mine, more than a museum

Set across 67 acres of the dramatic North Atlantic coastline near Pendeen, Geevor Tin Mine is the largest preserved mine site in Britain, and today it's the western gateway to the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape - a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. Tin was worked here from the 18th century right through to 1990, and since opening as a museum in 1993, Geevor has told the story of the men, women and machines behind Cornwall's industrial mining past through its listed engine houses, processing plant and outstanding collections.

Geevor is run by Pendeen Community Heritage, a local charity that has managed the site since 2001, doubling annual visitor numbers and creating year-round employment for the local community in the process. In October 2024 the museum welcomed its one millionth visitor - a landmark reached over three decades of opening its underground workings and surface buildings to the public - and in 2026 it was recognised with a TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice Award, placing it among the top 10% of attractions worldwide.

The highlight for most visitors is the guided underground tour into Wheal Mexico, an atmospheric 18th-century section of the mine reached via the original adit, alongside surface tours through the engine houses and dressing floors where the ore was crushed and processed. Back above ground, the Hard Rock Museum brings the human side of mining to life with oral histories, machinery displays and hands-on activities including gold panning, while a VR tour now offers an alternative way to experience the underground workings for anyone unable to make the physical descent. The site's café, recently refurbished, looks out over the Atlantic - one of the more dramatic lunch spots in Cornwall.
