The North Cornish coast is famous for its beautiful countryside, rugged coastline, and golden sandy beaches. The area has something for all ages: Polzeath has one of the best and safest surfing beaches in Cornwall, Daymer Bay is great for the bucket-and-spade brigade, and Rock provides a haven for sailors, windsurfers and water-skiers. The Sailing Club accepts temporary members and the sailing centre has boats for hire. Waterskiing and instruction is available. Sea fishing trips can also be enjoyed from the pontoon at Rock.
Walking along the coastal path and inland is extremely popular, especially in the early summer when the wild flowers are in bloom. The views are spectacular, particularly from Pentire Head and the Rumps. Visiting the church of St. Enodoc, set in the middle of the well-known golf course, is fascinating - recovered from the shifting sands, and now the burial place of John Betjeman. There is golf at St. Enodoc and Roserrow Country Club.
is a charming coastal village located on the north coast of Cornwall, England, and is known for its picturesque beauty, sandy beaches, and surfing opportunities. The village is nestled in a small valley and is a popular holiday destination, particularly for families and surfers due to its mellow waves and relatively safe waters. The name Polzeath is derived from the Cornish words "Porth" (meaning cove) and "Seath" (which is a personal name), translating to "Seath's Cove."
The Rumps are a pair of headlands located southeast of Polzeath, separated by a narrow gap known as Rump's Hole. These distinctive rock formations are part of the Pentire Point Heraldry of England, which extends into the Atlantic Ocean and is a popular spot for walking and enjoying the stunning coastal scenery. The Rumps are made up of volcanic rock and are part of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty known as the Cornwall AONB.
The Rumps are rich in history and are the site of an Iron Age cliff fort, which provides evidence of early human habitation and defense in the area. The fortifications, which include earthworks and the remains of huts, are well-preserved and can still be explored by visitors today. The site is also of archaeological interest as it is believed to have been occupied during the Roman period.
The area around Polzeath and The Rumps is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts, offering a range of activities such as surfing, rock climbing, hiking, and bird watching. The South West Coast Path, a long-distance walking trail, runs through the area, providing stunning views of the coastline and access to other nearby attractions.
Polzeath Beach is the main draw for tourists and locals alike. It is a large sandy beach that is well-managed and lifeguard-patrolled during the summer months. The beach is excellent for surfing, swimming, and sunbathing, and there are amenities such as cafes, shops, and public toilets nearby. The beach is also backed by sand dunes and cliffs, which provide a natural barrier and contribute to its scenic appeal.
The village itself has a relaxed atmosphere, with a good selection of shops, pubs, and restaurants catering to the holiday crowd. There are several surf schools and shops that rent out surfing gear, making it easy for visitors to take advantage of the waves. Polzeath is also close to other notable Cornish destinations such as Padstow, Rock, and Tintagel, which are all worth exploring during a stay in the area.
The Rumps and the surrounding coastline are part of the Polzeath Marine Conservation Zone, which helps to protect the diverse marine life in the area. This zone is home to a variety of species, including dolphins, seals, basking sharks, and an array of seabirds. Visitors can often spot these creatures from the shore or by taking boat trips from nearby harbours.
Polzeath and The Rumps offer a delightful combination of natural beauty, rich history, and recreational opportunities, making it an excellent place to visit for those seeking a quintessential Cornish coastal experience.
