The Cornish WayEXPLORE CORNWALL …'The Cornish Way'

Like the outdoors..?   Love exploring..?   Enjoy walking or cycling..?

Then why not leave the car behind and experience Cornwall by bike or on foot instead!

Currently under construction as part of the National Cycle Network, 'The Cornish Way' is due to be completed by June 2000. Its network of five inter-linking trails for cyclists and walkers will comprise mainly minor/rural road and off-road routes and will link into public transport facilities. Where possible, routes will also be available for equestrians and the mobility impaired.

Starting at the county boundary near Bude, the trails will pass through towns and villages as they make their way through Cornwall's distinctive countryside to Land's End. For long-distance riders 'The Cornish Way' will link into the existing West Country Way at Padstow which continues the National Cycle Network to Bristol, Bath and beyond.

With opportunities for novice cyclists as well as some challenging routes for the more experienced, 'The Cornish Way' will be a completely new way to enjoy the county, taking you into areas you might other-wise miss if travelling by car. For example, uncover the mining past of the Mineral Tramways area, ponder the ancient landscape of Penwith with its stone circles and monoliths, be intrigued by the 'White Alps' and stunning blue lakes of the China Clay area, or be exhilarated by the granite tors and high moorland of North Cornwall.

In addition, you'll find historic towns and villages, sandy beaches, art galleries and local museums and many other visitor attractions to suit all tastes.

A relaxing moment on the Camel TrailWhether you explore just a few miles of route or travel Cornwall end-to-end your way will be sign-posted throughout. For those without bikes, most trails will have cycle hire opportunities nearby, see the Yellow Pages or enquire at a Tourist Information Centre. Cornwall is not a flat county, but take heart and take your time… at the top of most hills you are likely to be rewarded with a spectacular view - and your efforts are a good excuse for a little indulgence later!

Maps and a Holiday Planner for 'The Cornish Way' will go on sale in Spring 2000. The Holiday Planner will include trail maps as well as information on accommodation, cycle hire, places to eat and attractions.

So plan your day or be spontaneous… whatever you choose to do, Cornwall is yours to explore at a pace that is entirely your own on 'The Cornish Way'…

Certain sections of the trails are being opened as they are constructed. An update of the construction works and details on sections opened to date are provided on Cornwall County Council's website. You can also telephone 'The Cornish Way' project team on (01872) 322320/322360.
