has been welcoming visitors for more than 100 yrs. On arriving in the
village of Port Isaac, open your car door and you are immediately assailed
by the smell of the sea and the call of the gulls. Your holiday
has begun…
After settling in, why not stretch your legs
with a walk.It could be a ten minute potter around the unspoilt village
of Port Isaac, taking in the working harbour, the pottery housed in the
old Methodist chapel or the simple joy of feeling the sand between your
toes on the beach!
Port Isaac, has retained traditional character
and remains unspoilt - a collection of pretty white washed cottages huddled
around a picturesque harbour, which is the heart of a thriving fishing
community. It has steep hills and narrow streets and the harbour is flanked
by majestic cliffs, towering above the Atlantic.
For those twenty-minute walkers, amble round
to the quaint and quiet Port Gaverne and for the truly hardy, the
two hour hike to Port Quinn offers some breath-taking views.
Port Isaac has featured in a number of TV
programmes and Films, The stunning location and quaint streets combine
to create a visually stunning backdrop. The Old School Hotel and Restaurant,
currently features as the school in ITV's Doc Martin, with Martin Clunes.
The village developed around the small harbour,
with the The streets and Cottages at the bottom of Port Isaac, dating
from the 15th Century with newer buildings having been added as you follow
the main street 'up' the hill.
The village is very popular in the summer
months and has a number of pubs, shops and cafes to support the flocks
of holiday makers and tourists that follow the road down to the harbour
from the main car parks. Amenities include the Golden Lion pub (10 metres),
bakers (20m), the Old Post Office Stores which sells newspapers (70m)
and a range of shops, cafes and restaurants within 5 minutes walking distance.
The beach is in the harbour. There is a quality
fishmonger with fresh, local catches next to the beach with an attached
aquarium with touch pool and tanks showing the fish, eels and shellfish
found in the area. A co-op at the top of the village sells a good range
of essentials.
