LAUNCESTON & NORTH CORNWALL Launceston, with its ruined castle on top of the hill, is in the enviable position of being just 30 minutes drive from both north and south coasts. It is also between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, which is ideal for walkers. Known as "The Gateway To Cornwall" we are easily accessible from the M5 via the A30 which then leads you on down into Cornwall and all its attractions. Launceston was the Ancient capital of Cornwall, with its castle holding a strategic position on the main crossing on the River Tamar - making it the chief town of a wide area lying between Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor. In Saxon times it was the site of a Royal Mint. By the 12th century the town itself had become walled (the only walled town in Cornwall) and for centuries the Assizes were housed here, in the castle itself and Guildhalls in the town. |
