Charlestown - St Austell Bay - Eden Project
Charlestown is a small harbour village to
the south-east of St Austell and is the home of Square Sail - a fleet
of square-rigged sailing vessels often used in filming.
The harbour has also been used for films
- most recently in "Alice In Wonderland" and "Doctor
Who".
It's only 2 or 3 miles to the Eden Project,
5 or 6 miles to The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the fishing village of
Mevagissey. To the east is the literary town of Fowey - for many years
the home of Daphne du Maurier and Quiller-Couch.Lanhydrock House &
Gardens (NT) are within a 20 minute drive, close to Lostwithiel, Cornwall's
capital in the days of the Stannnary Parliament.
Charlestown's harbour was built for the export
of China Clay, produced a few miles inland. There is a fine Shipwreck
& Heritage Centre in the village and the history of China Clay production
can be seen at Wheal Martyn Museum, north-west of St Austell.
Carlyon Bay, a mile to the east, has
an 18-hole championship links Golf Course. The are also 2 other golf courses
within 3 miles.
