Cringlers Barn, Zennor
Zennor is a small hamlet, lying in the rugged coastal moorland between St Just and St Ives. This stunning landscape was originally a busy farming, fishing, quarrying and mining area. The local granite from Zennor Hill was used in the construction of a large number of the buildings in St Ives and the harbour walls at Falmouth. The local industries have now, mostly declined, with the quarries and the mines closing long ago, leaving only a few farmers and fishermen to continue these once important occupations.
St Senara, is the Norman church located at the hearyt of the small village - on the site of an earlier 6th century Celtic church. St Senara's church is famous for two medieval bench-ends, which have been converted into a single seat. On one of the bench-ends is the famous carving of the Mermaid of Zennor - holding a comb and a mirror in her hands. The carving is dated 1737 - local Folklore suggests that Matthew Trewhella, the son of the churchwarden, dissapeared into the sea, after being enticed by a "Siren" - the Mermaid of Zennor.
This region of Cornwall was a densely populated area during our prehistory, with many archaeological sites, still visible in the landscape. Zennor Quoit, is an an imposing chamber tomb, located high on the moor. Zennor Quoit is a portal dolmen with an enclosed burial chamber, an antechamber and entrance façade. The Quoit has a large capstone - which has slipped out of position over the years - leaving it at an angle supported by one of the five supporting stones. There are two large slabs at either side of a closing stone.
